Statement Following the Taliban Resurgence in Afghanistan

August 26, 2021

Recent events in Afghanistan have affected people around the world. As evacuations continue and the situation develops, the Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) team remains committed to supporting those who may be struggling with anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns.

At CAPS, we:

  • Condemn the oppression and violence perpetrated by the Taliban.
  • Stand firm in our support for Afghan people who are shaken by the current instability and violence perpetrated by the Taliban, including women and girls, as well as religious and ethnic minorities who are especially at risk of violence and persecution.
  • Acknowledge the dedication and sacrifices of members of the military, Afghan allies, and their loved ones over the past 20 years.
  • Recognize the urgent need for humanitarian aid, safe evacuation, and refugee support.
  • Call on each other to provide support and compassion for those affected by this violence, including students whose loved ones may be experiencing it first-hand.

CAPS will continue to monitor the situation in Afghanistan and evaluate ways to support students.

Students interested in accessing CAPS services can get started with their first consultation here. Students can also collaborate with CAPS to plan an Outreach event to engage others on campus.
